I’ve been watching the recent events in South Africa unfold over social media, in a state of shock and disbelief.
The country has been gripped by riots, looting and co-ordinated arson attacks on businesses. Please read on, I know it’s easy to say “that’s sad” and move on with your day, but I would personally like to ask you to spare the cost of a cup of coffee to help feed hungry kids.
I’ve had a mix of emotions, everything from anger to empathy, but mostly helplessness, being based in the UK, I’ve been unable to do anything. I’ve been really worried about my friends and family in South Africa. Pietermaritzburg a city I called home for several years has been decimated, it is one of the worst hit areas, with shops, malls, businesses and factories burned to the ground.
The sad thing thing here, is that the Billions of Rands (several hundred Million Dollars) worth of damage was done to an already struggling economy, the impact on jobs and the livelihoods of the local community will be felt for years to come.
South Africans are resilient, they will rebuild, but they can’t do it alone.
Darren Carlson, one of my favourite Instagram/Twitter accounts has set up a GoFundMe, he’s chosen to support 2 fantastic charities, please click though, give his page a read and please give what you can!
